STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM - FAQ'S

  • How do I register for the Study Abroad Program (SAP)?
    Go to the program page on our web site (under Study Abroad Programs menu, select the country u are interested), download the application, fill it out online (you can type into the application, NO hand written applications please) and bring with your deposit to CIBER office between 8.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. We are located at MARC 240. We will also need a copy of you current passport, a physical examination doctor's certificate, copy of health insurance card, at the time of registration or no later than when paying your final balance.

  • What do I need to qualify for the SAP?
    The courses you selected for Study Abroad need to be approved by your advisor.

  • Is there a limit on the number of students that can go to a SAP?
    Yes. That's why we strongly encourage students to bring their application early with a deposit since space is limited. Priority will be given to qualified early applicants with deposits.

  • Do I need a professor's permit to be able to register for an SAP class?
    Yes. The professor who is conducting the program must give you a permit to register for each course you are taking in the SAP.

  • What Courses are offered?
    Refer to your application to obtain the list of courses offered since the courses may vary.

  • How many classes can I take in the SAP?
    A maximum of six credit hours. You may take 3 credit hours each in two different SAP's.

  • What is the program cost?
    Refer to the program application of your interest for approximate program cost.

  • Is Tuition & Fees included in the cost of the program?
    No. You must pay tuition like any other course on campus.

  • Does financial aid pay for SAP?
    In some cases it does. Inquire with the financial aid office whether you qualify for the financial aid program.

  • What does the program cost include?
    It includes your airfare, accommodation while on the trip, some meals, some tour guides and transportation within the country where the trip is being held (not on spontaneous trips that you may decide to do on your own). The tuition for the courses is not included. It is the usual FIU tuition.

  • Do I need to buy the books for the classes I am taking in the SAP?
    Yes, just like any other normal course taken on campus.

  • What documents do I need?
    It is your responsibility to contact the embassy of the country of destination, to obtain the information required to attain your visa with plenty of lead-time. Embassy information is provided in your program application. For visa purposes only you will be given the airline ticket along with a letter from the university stating the purpose of the trip, after you pay the final balance.

  • Do I need to have a good health record to take the trip?
    Yes. Students must show proof of being in good physical health before the trip (a doctor's certificate). The doctor's certificate may be obtained through the college wellness center or through your private doctor.

  • Do I need travel insurance even if I have a health insurance?
    Yes, you are required to purchase travel insurance even though you have health insurance. For more information regarding travel insurance, please contact STA Travel. Phone no:1-800-781-4040 or visit their web site at www.sta.com

  • Are there any special arrangements for vegetarians or special religious or health diets?
    NO.

  • Do you accept credit cards to pay for the SAP trip?
    No. We accept only money orders or checks. Make checks payable to FIU and write your SS No. and Panther ID in the check memo.

  • Can I take someone along with me for the trip?
    Only if he/she is also a participating student in the SAP.

  • Do I need to speak the language of the country I am visiting?
    No, your classes will be held in English.

  • What are the grading policies for the courses offered? On what basis will we be graded?
    The criteria for grading is the same as a regular university campus class.
