SPAIN 2008

Frequently Asked Questions

The Romans arrived in 218 BC in Barcelona. As a natural progression of Roman power, Barcelona, as a seaport and trading center, was important before Spain became a world power in the 15th century. The language of the region exemplifies its history: after two thousand years, Catalan remains distinct. Yet, the history of Spain shows that immigration and diversity are not new: Spain, as a nation, has cultural differences rivaled by few. At the edge of the Mediterranean, Spain has occupied a unique position, geographically, politically, and culturally, in world history. Spain today is a modern economic power, member of the European Union, and bears its history with pride. No nation can boast the combination of Latin and Arabic art and science in its arts, in its achievements, like Spain. The idea of the novel was born in Spain with Cervantes. The exploration of the Western Hemisphere was financed by Spain, with an Italian entrepreneur. The battles between Christians and Muslims were decided mainly in Spain.

Spain offered, and proffered, interaction between opposing powers and was one of the first “buffer states.” Spain was, and is, a bulwark of Catholicism. But as it was a haven for Jews and Muslims centuries ago, Spain preserves and honors its heritage. Of course there are the bulls, and the dances in Sevilla, and even the magnificent Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the medieval fortress city of Toledo, and the incomparable Alcazar in Segovia, whose accent is a Roman aqueduct of enormous proportions. Where Paris titillates, Spain speaks to the heart.
